Sister Sarah Perkins

April 4, 1930 — April 1, 2023

Austin, Texas

The epitome of elegance and steadfast faith, with her family at her bedside, Sister Sarah E. Perkins entered Eternal rest on April 1, 2023, at the age of ninety-two years, eleven months, and twenty-eight days.

A blessed event took place on April 4, 1930, in Elgin, Texas, when the late Jack Ollie and Maggie Wade Ollie was blessed with their second child, Sarah. She attended the public schools of Bastrop County and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1947. Sarah continued her education through John's Community Nursing School and in 1964 became a Licensed Vocational Nurse for the State of Texas.

Sarah grew up in a strong Christian home and accepted Christ at an early age, being baptized by Reverend E.J. Johnson at the Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

Sarah was united in Holy Matrimony in 1952 to Charles Henry Perkins and to this union was blessed with three children: Helen Marie, Charles Grant, and Maggie Beatrice.  She was an avid seamstress for various clothing items for her children and other family members and loved gardening with her mother, Maggie Ollie.

Sarah worked for forty-five years at John’s Community Hospital, primarily in Labor and Delivery.  Over the years she worked in various departments, always returning to L&D. While utilizing her license, she worked as a private duty nurse at many other nursing facilities in Williamson, Bastrop and Travis counites.  She continued to renew her license many years after her retirement.

Sarah was a faithful and active member of Mount Moriah until the end, serving with many auxiliaries and committees. She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and a dependable Church Clerk, writing beautiful resolutions.  Mrs. Perkins was a true freedom fighter. She was a member of the first organized Black community committee in Elgin, “The 5 W’s”: Who, What, Where, When, Why. She played an active part in the suit against the City of Elgin which led her to be a big supporter of the NAACP in Elgin.  She was an active member of the Texas League of Vocational Nurses in Williamson County. Her extreme hospitality and friendship were felt among the members of the church and the community. She was a loving, spiritual, and God-fearing woman.

Awaiting Sarah’s arrival in Glory are her parents; two brothers, Chester Ollie, and Jimmie L. Wade; one sister, Addie Madison; and granddaughter, Kara A. Perkins.

Mrs. Sarah E. Perkins’ beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Helen M. Jackson (Robert), Charles G. Perkins (Dorothy), and Maggie B. Strong; four grandchildren, Millicent M. Jackson, Rachel D. Jackson, Melvin C. Strong, Jr., and Kimberly J. Strong; one sister, Lerene O. Davis; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Johnson and Raybelle Jones; several nieces, nephews, and cousins covering three to four generations as well as a host of other relatives, and friends, including the Mount Moriah church family.

She will lie In-State at Elgin Funeral Home on Monday, April 10th from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM.  A Home Going Celebration will be conducted at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 11th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Steven Ward presiding.  Interment will follow at Westbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family would prefer plants to celebrate Sarah's green thumb and continue to see her love bloom.
