Sedalia Simmons

August 31, 1915 — January 10, 2019

On August 31, 1915 God sent a precious gift to Eddie Loving and Olivia Wade Loving in the city of Round Top, Texas. They named her Sedalia.  She attended the Round Top Public schools and graduated May 4, 1934 as Salutatorian of her class.

She confessed her hope in Christ at an early age was baptized and became a member of the Concord Missionary Baptist Church in Round Top, Texas, under the pastorate of Reverend W. M. Anderson.  After moving to Elgin, she united with the Mount Moriah Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Johnson.  She sang in the Gospel Chorus, chairperson of Food Committee, served with Deaconess, Mission 1, faithful member until her health failed and holds the distinction of being the oldest Member and the Mother of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

She knew about spiritual service, but also took care of the domestic needs of three prominent families in Elgin (Simons, Webbs and Cloptons) until she began working for Travis State Schools. She worked there for over 15 years and upon retirement in 1977, she was supervisor for the New Dining room.

Her children were her joy and blessing.  She shared them with former spouse, James Gregg and McKinley Mayfield, II.  But, her greatest blessing from the Lord was when she met and married her husband of thirty seven years,  Elijah Simmons who led the way in caring, loving, providing and in supporting their family and community.  She was a great cook and was known for her homemade Pound cake, Buttermilk pies and loved gardening and reading. She was a member of Eastern Star Prince Hall.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eddie Loving; her mother, Olivia Wade Loving; her husband Elijah Simmons, her sister Lucille Loving Harris; and two sons, Edgar Gregg, Jr., James Donald Gregg and one grandson, Alan Dwayne Mayfield.

Anticipating a glorious reunion in accordance with 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18, her daughter, Carolyn L. Mayfield Hawkins Carter (Ronald); son, McKinley Mayfield III (Gloria); Seven grandchilden; Reginald Hawkins of Richmond, Virginia; Anthony Hawkins of Cypress, Texas and Soneytria Mayfield (Nemur) of Kyle, Texas,  Walter Earl of Austin, Texas and Latecia Rudison of Georgetown, Texas; Nishone Gillespie (Paul) of Hutto, Texas and Briona Madison (Devin) of Elgin, Texas. Fourteen great grandchildren: Anais Hawkins Mullen (Sean) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Ian Hawkins and Elijah Hawkins of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Emeree and Zaylee Mussaad of Kyle, Texas; Jonathan Elder of Georgetown, Texas; Porche’ Wilson of Houston, Texas; Derric, Aspen, Jaksyn, and Brooke Gillespie of Hutto, Texas; Dayvon, Dev’Ree and Destin Madison of Elgin, Texas; and one Great great grandchild, Isabella Nicole Hawkins of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Lifelong friends with Ramona Renteria, her best friend for over 75 years; Eddie Shaw, Mary Westbrook, and Ivory Flowers. And, the close knit neighborhood family of Frank Flores, Georgina Nunez, James and Dorothy McCarther, Rene Davis and Michael Nunez were always there to lend a helping hand when needed. And, her only loving first cousin, Ruby Jones and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sedalia Loving Simmons, 103, of Elgin, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, January 10, 2019.  The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home on Friday, January 18th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, January 19th at 2:00 PM with Reverend Steven Ward presiding. Interment will follow at Westbrook Memorial Cemetery.
