Richard Card, Sr.

January 28, 1946 — July 18, 2018

On the evening of July 18, 2018, while surrounded by family and friends, Richard Card departed this world to begin eternal journey in Heaven with the Lord. At the time of his passing, he was 72 years old. Richard was born January 28th, 1946, in Hobbs, NM and lived in many locations while growing up. He joined the Navy in 1966, and spent four years serving our country during the Vietnam war. In 1970, he met Carolyn Golden and on September 18th, 1971, the two were wed in Holy Matrimony. They welcomed two sons into the world, Richard Arnold Card, Jr. on July 5, 1973, and Stewart Lealand Card July 28, 1977. Rick and Carolyn were married over 46 years, until the time of his death.

In 1972, Rick joined the Southern Pacific Railroad while he lived in El Paso, then moved to Sanderson, TX in 1979, with his family, where they spent 16 years. In 1995, they moved to Brackettville, TX Rick, where they lived until his retirement in 2007. In 2008, they moved to Elgin, where he lived until his passing. Throughout the years, they made many new friends, whom were all considered family. Everyone was always welcomed at their home with open arms and were second parents to many of the children that grew up with Rick Jr. and Lealand.

Rick also found his calling to become a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. In 1984 he joined Sanderson Lodge #988 and began his journey as a Brother Mason. He continued to this passion by becoming a member of the El Paso York Rite, El Paso Scottish Rite and El Paso Shrine. He was Past Master of the Masonic Lodges in Sanderson #988, Brackettville #444, Giddings #280 and Mina #1456. He also achieved the rank 32nd Degree Mason. In 2001 he watched his youngest son Lealand be raised to a Master Mason and often introduced him as “His Brother His Son.”

Throughout his life, Rick was always larger than life; there was nothing he would not do for anyone that needed help, whether he knew them or not. He could be seen on Sundays at Central Christian Church, where he was an Elder, welcoming anyone that came through the door. During Christmas, he entertained the Lodge as Santa Claus and in his younger years dressed as a clown for children at events for the Shriners.

Rick and Carolyn loved to scuba dive and would often join friends on their adventures. His love for cars was well known to everyone who knew him and he passed this on to his sons.

He is proceeded in death by his Mother Margaret Card, his father Arnold Card and his sister Margo Faye Corbin.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn Card; his two sons, Richard Card, Jr. and his wife Rosalie and their daughters, Angel and Willa Mae of Bastrop; Lealand Card and his wife Lisa and their son Brenden of Lubbock. Rick will be missed by everyone that he crossed paths with.

A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be conducted at the Central Christian Church of Elgin, 17 North Avenue B, on Saturday, July 21st at 2:00 PM

The family requests that Memorials be made in Rich’s Honor to “The Shrine Children’s Hospital,” 901 N. Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, TX 78232, or to a Charity of your choice.
