For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16Orvid Powell, of Elgin, Texas, son of Oscar W. Powell, Jr. and Willie Mae Waites Powell, departed his earthly life on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at St. Davids Medical Center in Austin, Texas. He was born the eldest of three children on Sunday, July 28, 1940 in Cedar Creek, Texas Bastrop County. Through the guidance of loving and Christian parents, at an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was an active member of Weeping Willow Missionary Baptist Church in McDade, Texas.He attended Bastrop Public Schools and graduated from Emile High School in 1958. A few years after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy on July 31, 1963. He was honorably discharged on August 5, 1967. Upon discharge, he worked for the United States Postal Service.In August of 1964, he married Joyce Marie Sanders. Their Union of thirteen years produced two children, Jacqualyn and Ovid, II.In July of 1979, he married Linda Diane Reese. He and Diane were married for seven years.Powell Pal, as he was affectionately known, was always outspoken and outgoing. He enjoyed telling stories and making people laugh. To him, no one was a stranger. He was also quite the hunter and fisherman. He loved to share the details of his hunting and fishing trips. Powell was also an avid dominoes and cards aficionado. Many also knew him for his superb upholstery and tailoring skills. He had clients from all around. He could do it all, cars, boats, furniture, clothes, you name it His upholstery work won many awards at car shows throughout the state and country. Pal was also an active member of the Elgin Juneteenth Celebrations and a member of the Elgin NAACP 6174. His youthful spirit and vibrant personality will be missed by all who knew and loved him.He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar W. Powell, Jr. paternal grandparents, Oscar and Silas Powell maternal grandparents, Lovie and Lucille Waites one sister, Deloris Powell whom he fondly called Sister.He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving mother, Willie Mae Waites one daughter, Jackie Burns husband Robert of Austin one son, Orvid, II Junior of Atlanta, Georgia one granddaughter, Christina Burns one grandson Robert Nicholas burns, both of San Antonio one sister, Sandra Dukes of Austin two aunts, Margaret Reed of Pflugerville and Ruth Jones of Corpus Christi and a host of other relatives and friends.
