Dea’s Journey ~
When you hear of my Homegoing…don’t worry about me –
Mural Lean Wright, affectionately called "Dea" by her loved ones, was born on December 14, 1926, to Dempsey and Cora T. Wright in Cedar Creek, Bastrop County, Texas. She was the seventh of nine children. Growing up in the country with a strong Christian foundation, Mural professed a belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized, and she joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Enterprise Church. Later, she and her mother moved to Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church in Cedar Creek, Texas. As a young adult, Mural transferred her membership to Saint Paul Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, along with her daughter, and remained a good faithful member until her death.
Mural was raised on a farm in Cedar Creek, Texas. She gardened, preserved fruits and vegetables, and took care of the animals with her siblings. At ninety-six, one could find her outside caring for her garden and her beloved dog.
Quilting was not just a hobby for Mural; it was a passion she inherited from her mother. She lovingly crafted a handmade quilt for every child in her family, from her grandchildren to her great-great-grandchildren. At the age of ninety-seven, she completed her final quilt for her grandson, Jermaine, ensuring that every family member had a piece of her love and care.
Dea treasured traveling and having fun. She enjoyed visiting her family, spending weeks with her Aunt Leotha Swain in Elgin, Texas, her sisters, Dorothy and Alma Lee in Bastrop, and her extended family in Dallas. Dea was fond of recounting tales from their childhood, reminiscing about horseback riding and frolicking in creeks and ponds. Sister Wright and her sister, Dorothy, her daughter, and several nieces all delighted in each other's company while traveling to various states for the National Baptist Primitive Convention. Additionally, she journeyed with St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church to numerous events, with the "Flying Doves" being the most unforgettable time of her life.
Mural led an active and fulfilling life, for this legacy she established is priceless and endless. She is proceeded in death by her parents, all her siblings, Dempsey Wright, Erma Sol Wright, Telamon Wright, Costello, Wright, Homer Wright Sr. Alma Lee Green and Dorothy Peterson, her son, Tommy Galloway Houston, and grandson, Samuel M.
