Mary Perkins

July 28, 1941 — March 12, 2018

Mary Eliza Scroggins Perkins , of Elgin, Texas, daughter of John Ellis and Lula Mae (Tisdale) Scroggins departed her earthly life on Monday, March 12, 2018. She was born on July 28, 1941in Elgin, Texas (Bastrop County). She was the youngest of eight children. She attended the public schools of the county and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

Through the guidance of loving and Christian parents, at an early age, Eliza accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior She was baptized at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Elgin. Mary Eliza was a longstanding and faithful member, serving her God in and out of season. Because of her love for music, Liza joined the church choir. Singing and praising the Lord until health began to decline. She loved and supported the church music ministry.

After graduating high school, Liza’s first job was working at City Café on Main Street. During this time, Liza had two children, Annetta “Gail” and Brookshire “Wayne”.

On May 3, 1971, Liza joined Clarence R. Perkins in holy matrimony. Through the fruits of their union two children were born, Juanita and Clarence, Jr.

Liza began to work at Travis State School in 1982, there she remained until the doors closed in 1995. Being a strong black mother, she worked for Girling’s Home Health; signifying how she was always serving others, while taking care of her family.

Liza enjoyed eating at several of Elgin’s restaurants. You would always see her and Wayne out and about. The pair are well known patrons of Southside Meat Market and Golden Chick. Anytime she could; she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, talking on the phone to Lois Vincent and Mildred Dove, playing dominoes, and watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs.

Waiting in Heaven for Liza are her parents, her husband, three brothers - Ruben Haywood Scroggins, Sr., John Ellis Scroggins, Jr., and Shirley James “Buster” Scroggins; four sisters, Virgie Ree Jackson Wiley, Jeffery Alton Scroggins Wright Walker, Bobbie Jean Canady Thomas, and Birdie Marie Brown.

Liza leaves to celebrate and cherish her living legacy, four children: Annetta “Gail” and her husband, Ural Wade; Brookshire “Wayne” Scroggins; Juanita Faye Perkins and her special friend, Michael Slaughter; Clarence Richard Perkins, Jr. and his wife, Sky; all of Elgin; seven grandchildren: Ural Dean Wade Jr. and his wife, Victoria; Wesley Jerome Wade, Deyon Marquise Davis and his wife, Rebecca; Colin Eugene Wade, Devina Lynn Collins, Aden Richard Perkins, Nathan Lynn Perkins; three great grandchildren: Brayden D. Wade, Isaiah M. Wade, Grayson L. Wade; two special nieces and nephew; Patricia Wright Williams of San Antonio, Brenda Jihad Abdullah of Houston, and Homer Howard Wright of Austin, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends, including the Mount Moriah Church Family.
