Mary Nell Chapman, 86, retired nurse, passed away on Wednesday evening, May 22, 2013. Mary Nell was born to Robert Lee Carter and Janie Owens Carter on September 1, 1926, in Elgin, Texas. She graduated from Elgin High School and the Scott White School of Nursing. While she was a Registered Nurse, she met her husband, Ben at Scott and White Hospital, while taking care of who would become her future fatherinlaw Ben Chapman, Sr.On April 8, 1950, she married Benjamin Franklin Chapman at the First United Methodist Church of Elgin. They lived in Muleshoe, Texas from 1950 until 1986, where they owned and operated Chapman Supply Company in Muleshoe and sold irrigation equipment. Together they raised two children, Martha Jane and William Carter Bill Chapman. Ben and Mary Nell moved back to Elgin in 1986. She was active in her Elgin High School reunions until her move to Plano in 2011. They joined the First Methodist Church and resided at 327 McClendon, next door to dear friends Vince and Karen Dungan. They also became very close to John and Marilyn Cornelius, John and Shirley McKamie, Nancy and Charley Graham, Linn and Susan Bledsoe and Ray and Lin Worsham and many other dear friends from their church family.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Benny on September 4, 2006 both of her parents brothers, Ned Tom, Bill, Robert Junior, and Owens Carter and her sister and brotherinlaw, Mozelle and George Allen from Elgin.Mary Nell is survived by her daughter Martha and soninlaw Mike Bernatis of Plano her son and daughterinlaw, Bill and Cheryl Chapman of Humble, Texas grandsons, Clint from Seattle and Kyle Bernatis and his wife, Kristina and great grandbaby Giada of Plano. Mary Nell also loved her granddaughters, Katherine, and Adrienne Chapman of Humble.The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 28th. A funeral service will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church of Elgin at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 29th. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Ben at the Elgin Cemetery following services, with John Cornelius, Vince Dungan, John McKamie, Linn Bledsoe, Ray Worsham and Mike Bernatis honoring as Pallbearers.
