Mary Calhoun

Mary Loretta Calhoun, 78, of Elgin, passed away peacefully, at her home, surrounded by her loving family, Thursday afternoon, June 8, 2023.  Mary was born the sixth of seven children to Mary Belle Lewis Burnett and Lorell Burnett in Austin, Texas on July 29, 1944.  Mary grew up and attended schools in Austin and graduated from Austin High with the Class of ’62.  After attending college, she worked for various companies before beginning a 30-year career with Motorola as a Fab Technician.  After retiring from Motorola, she began another career with the I.R.S. where she retired again after 15 years of service.  While still in high school, she met George Wesley Calhoun.  After a short courtship, the two were united in marriage on June 27, 1962.  While still living in Austin, the young couple began their family with the birth of their three sons, George Warren Calhoun, Gordon Wade Calhoun, and Gregory Ward Calhoun.  In the early 70’s, the family purchased property in the Elgin area and in 1983, made Elgin their home.  Mary loved to spend her time with her family fishing, camping and playing bingo.  She loved cooking and spending her time with family.  She loved watching the butterflies and her wildflowers while sitting on her front porch.

She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband of 42 years, George Wesley Calhoun; her son, Gregory Ward Calhoun; her four brothers, George, Larmer, Gene, and Jesse Burnett; her sister, L.B. Puckett; and her grandson, William Nathaniel Calhoun.

She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Warren Calhoun and wife Aimee of Liberty Hill and Wade Calhoun of Elgin; her 10 grandchildren, Kandis Carr, Mavis Merridth, Kristi Calhoun, Megan Thomas, Quentin Thomas, Kendall Calhoun, Sadie Calhoun, Jeremiah Calhoun, Jessica Calhoun, and Westin Calhoun; and 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Family and friends will gather at Elgin Funeral Home on Monday, June 12th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  A Funeral Service will be held at Elgin Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 13th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Marty Reed presiding.  Interment will follow at Elgin Cemetery.
