Mabin Hammond

Mabin Wendell "Ham" Hammond passed away at the age of 87, on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2015. Wendell was born to Mabin Arnold Hammond and Joan Freeland Mayfield Hammond on July 27, 1927 in Humble, Texas. He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a WWII Victory Medal along with other awards. After the Army, he worked at Union Carbide in Texas City as a lab technician before moving to the instrument department. During his 36 years at Carbide, he also served in the United States Navy Reserves where he was a Chief radioman and continued his education, eventually earning his Bachelors degree at the University of Houston. He was very passionate about his work and extremely dedicated. He fixed and maintained many of the Navy's radio communication equipment. He became part of the Navy MARS program where, he thrived and became part of the Chief MARS staff and director of Region 6 and all of South Texas. He achieved the highest rating as an N/MC MARS operator can obtain - NMOC Master Chief. His dedication and effort will be remembered by many as he helped new members to become radio operators. He served a total of 25 years in the Navy Reserves where he retired as Chief Petty Officer. Wendell met his wife Shirley in October of 1976, and married on January 7, 1977. The two of them shared many great memories and were the picture of true love. After retiring Wendell and wife Shirley moved to Elgin, TX, where they owned and operated an R/C fuel company "Powermaster." Wendell had a passion for R/C planes and enjoyed the hobby as well as the business. He accomplished many things in his life but most of all was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, brother Frank, and sister Ruby. He is survived by his loving bride and best friend, Shirley Hammond; his three children, Sandra and husband Richard Williams, John Hammond and wife Ida, and Laura Hammond Thibodeaux; five grandchildren, Jacob Robinson and wife Rachel, Amanda and husband Brandon Scott, Katherine Hammond, Aline Williams, and Elcio Williams; his four nephews, Bobby Mills, Gregg Boyd, Weldon Boyd, and Stephen Boyd; his niece, Stephanie Boyd; and three great-grandchildren, Mckenzie Robinson, Jayden Kieffer, and Mason Hammond.The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, July 10th. A Funeral Service will be conducted at Elgin Funeral Home at 3:00 PM Saturday, July 11th with the Reverend, Tom Nuckels officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at the McDade Cemetery.
