Louis Green, Jr., 76, of Elgin went to be with his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday evening, April 8, 2021. He was born the first son, to the late Erma and Louis Green, in Elgin, on June 3, 1944. Louis grew up in Elgin, where he attended school and was a faithful member of the Weeping Willow Missionary Baptist Church of McDade. While attending a Revival at Weeping Willow, Louis decided to make Jesus his choice! He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized by the late Reverend Jones. The Green family attended Weeping Willow faithfully and later moved their memberships to the Pleasant Bethany Missionary Baptist Church of Elgin.
One fateful day, Louis met the love of his life, Nell Ruth Smith; the two were united in Holy Matrimony on July 13, 1963 – Oh what a love they would share! This union brought them six wonderful children, Veronda, Theresa, Louis W., Michon, Byron, Bobbie, and their bonus baby girl Angie. Louis loved, adored, and provided for his family; they in turn loved him right back.
Louis was employed with the Butler Brick Company for many years, then with the University of Texas, and later retired with the City of Austin.
Louis loved sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed watching Western Movies, taking care of his yard, and dedicated many hours to the prideful care of his garden. He was a man of few words, but when engaged in conversation, one could expect humor, wisdom, and authority. He had many friends and never met a stranger. He was fondly referred to by the younger generation as “Cool Man” and “Mr. Sonny Man.”
Waiting to welcome him Home were his parents; two sisters, Loma Moore and Lois Cantu; one brother, Lee Arthur Green; his best friends, Chester Alexander, Robert Barnes, and Benny Ockletree.
He leaves to cherish his love and memory his wife of 57 years, Nell; his six children, Veronda Green, Theresa Workman, Louis W. Green and wife Paula, Michon La’Nell, Byron Green and wife O’Kycha, and Bobbie and husband Lonnie Davis; his 12 grandchildren, Keiman Green, Justin Green and wife Tavia, Jason Green, Tyshon and husband Michael Curtis, Kendrick McDonald, Romesha and husband Dwayne Howard, Tierra McKinney, Keneddra Williams, Arbornae Foreman, Davia Green, Kaniya Foreman, and Sarai Carter; four sisters Viola Perkins, Erna Mae Berry, Gloria Ockletree, Mary Jo and husband Gilbert McCray; on brother, Melvin Green and wife Carolyn; his sister-in-law, Margie Green; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
He will lie in state at Elgin Funeral Home, Friday, April 16th, from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM; family and friends will later gather at 6:00 PM for visitation. A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church of Elgin, Saturday, April 17th at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
