Larry Jackson, Sr.

January 13, 1949 — January 25, 2021

Elgin, Texas

Words cannot express the humility in this man we called
Husband, Daddy, Paw Paw, Uncle, Cousin, Friend, Christian, Child of God…

Mr. Larry Donnell Jackson, Sr. went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, January 25, 2021. Mr. Jackson, affectionately called “Jack” was a long life-time resident of Bastrop County and on January 25th the community began to mourn the passing of a strong and upright man.

Larry was the son born to the late Roy D. Jackson and Etta Mae Jackson on January 13, 1949. Larry was the little brother to Joyce and a hero to Aubrey and Sharon. When they were young lads, their mother was sick and passed which brought a change in their young lives.  They were raised by their grandparents, Leon and Larthulia Moore in the small community of Sayers.  Through the guidance of loving and a strong Christian foundation, Larry and his siblings had much love and care.  Larry attended the public schools of Bastrop County and graduated from Emile High School in Bastrop, Texas in 1967.  Larry accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Union Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J. D. Cleveland. Upon graduation, Larry joined the United States Air Force, serving a four-year tenure at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.  Larry learned his trade  as a mechanic while serving his country.  The skills he learned helped him to work for 290 Auto Repair and Arbuckle Oil Company.  As he began to master his trade, Larry stepped out on faith and became a small business owner in the county, serving the people through Jackson’s Garage.

On January 9, 1971, Larry was united in Holy Matrimony to Pauline Jones and through the fruits of their union three children were born. The couple was married for forty- eight years at the time of her death in 2019.

Larry was a longstanding and faithful member of Union Hill Baptist Church; he and his family were willing workers.  Through his journey, he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, member of the Brotherhood, Male Chorus, and a Senior Usher.  As the church grew, Deacon Larry stood on the word. He was the new Pastor’s strongest supporter, Reverend Aubrey Jackson, Larry’s little brother, who became his Pastor in July 2010.

Larry enjoyed fishing, watching the western channel, and spending time in his shop working on some old car.  He loved his family and was very favored for being a Paw Paw.  He did not push the Bible on anyone but could stand up for a good Bible challenge. Larry supported the Bastrop and Elgin communities and schools, trying to stay quiet during football season.  Larry was a member of Union Center Lodge # 245 A. M. & A. F. of Texas. This God-fearing man was an icon in the community, an upright citizen, and a friend for life.

Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline and their first-born child, Trina; his parents and grandparents, his brother, Reverend Aubrey Jackson and a nephew, Ronald Tennon.

Larry leaves in God’s hands to share his legacy: his children: Larry Jackson, Jr and his wife, Jennifer; and Chanda and her husband, Dominique Dewitty; a God-Child, Ashley and her husband, Herb Addison; eight grandchildren, six great grand children, one God-grandchild; two sisters, Joyce and her husband, Truman Thomas and Sharon and her husband, Reverend M. C. Walker; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Jackson, Lovie and her husband, Reverend Otis Banks, and Erma Johnson and her significant other, Marshall Davis; one uncle, Lorance Jones, Sr.; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends covering four generations, including Michelle Cruz and Ollie Nunn.

Family and Friends will gather at the Elgin Funeral Home for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Friday, January 29th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Utley, Saturday, January 30th at 10:00 AM with the Reverend L. R. wilson, presiding.  Interment will follow at Colorado Chapel Cemetery.
