Joyce Atkinson Love

Joyce Love, a cherished mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at 85 years old. She was born on July 6, 1939, to Lillian and Joseph Atkinson in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. 

Joyce lived life boldly from the start, known during her childhood as a tomboy willing to climb any roof or bike across the countryside alone. She continued this adventurous spirit when at the age of 20 she immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Texas. Joyce was a meticulous bookkeeper, working in multiple industries including her favorite - broadcasting. She captivated friends and strangers alike with her English accent, “wonky” sense of humor, and cheeky charm. 

Joyce met and married the love of her life, Dan Love, and they cherished 36 happy years together until his passing. She enjoyed spending time with their blended family, including her daughter and his adult children, their grandchildren, and his sisters and extended family in Dallas. Among family and friends alike she was an avid and enthusiastic host, known for being the life of every party: from neighborhood block parties to church small groups to afternoon teas. Her home and beloved English style garden were a place for all to gather. 

During retirement Joyce finally had the time to devote to creative outlets such as painting, wood burning, wood carving, and stained glass. She was fond of entering her artwork in competitions and gifting many pieces to loved ones throughout the years. She was also a dedicated volunteer, giving back to her community and within her church. Since Dan’s passing, Joyce and her family were especially blessed by her church and neighborhood communities who rallied around her in a similar way with meals, yard work, and countless acts of service.

Joyce will be fondly remembered for her obsession with Cadbury chocolate, her insistence that you shouldn't be stingy when pouring a glass of wine, and her instruction that water for tea must always reach a rolling boil. She will be greatly missed by her dogs, Titch and Duchess, and the squirrel she liked to feed, Charlie.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Alison, granddaughter, Jori, sister-in-law, Irene, and niece, Sheryl. She is predeceased by her husband, Dan Love, and her brother Joseph Atkinson. A celebration of life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Bastrop on Thursday, March 6th at 4:00 PM.
