Josephine Louise Metcalfe Smith, 95, retired State of Texas Archives Librarian, stepped onward and began her rest in the arms of the Lord, Saturday evening, December 24, 2011. Josephine was born in McDade, Texas, on September 24, 1916, the second of five children, to Joseph Franklin Metcalfe, Sr. and Ethel Louise Taylor Metcalfe. She grew up and attended schools in Bastrop County. In 1942, she married Francis Palmer Smith, Jr. in Elgin, Texas. They resided in Atlanta, GA until his death in 1960. After her husband passed away, she returned to Elgin, TX and continued to advance her education while attending TWU Denton and then UT Austin, where she ultimately received two degrees in documentary services. At various dates, she worked in that field for TWU Denton, UT Austin, Georgia Institute of Technology, Rice University, and retired in 1979, with the State of Texas Archives.
