John Smith, Sr., 74, of Bastrop, passed away Friday, August 27, 2021. John Smith was born to Herbert Smith and Ella Mae Jackson in Bastrop, Texas in 1946. He had one sister- Emma, three brothers- Herbert Jr., James (his twin) and Larry. John grew up in the community of Taylor, attending the public schools in Taylor Independent School District, graduating from O.L. Price High School.
After high school John started working for the City of Austin and later joined the Trucking Industry where he hauled construction equipment, building supplies, and a variety of other materials across the 49 states. Known as Fly-By-Night, he never missed a deadline.
John had a fun-loving personality and a great sense of humor. Even in difficult times, John found a way to brighten the room with a joke or playful banter. His carefree and easy-going demeanor made people gravitate to him.
After 74 years of blessings God in his infinite wisdom has called John from labor to reward on August 27, 2021. He exchanged his cross for a crown. John is preceded in death by his parents- Herbert and Ella Mae Smith, sister, Emma Davis, Herbert Smith Jr. (Josephine of Austin Texas), James Smith and Larry Smith.
John’s legacy will live on through his children, Lisa Smith, Kenneth Smith, Sam Smith, Johnathan Smith (Erika), Loretta Smith and Jerielle Smith, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins, and friends.
He will lie in state at Elgin Funeral Home, Friday, September 3rd from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted graveside at Clearview Cemetery of Bastrop, Saturday, September 4th at 11:00 AM with the Reverend, Kathleen Amboree presiding.
