James Calhoun

August 19, 1942 — March 26, 2025

Elgin

James Dean Calhoun, aka Jimmy, was born on August 19, 1942, in Fort Stockton, Texas, to Roy Dean and Jesse Zelma Calhoun.

As a child, he enjoyed playing baseball with his cousins and friends. It was not uncommon for him to hit home runs. He could hit the ball over the railroad tracks to the dismay of the other team. Some say that when Jimmy came to play ball, the opposing team quit.

At the age of 15, he started working with his dad as a roofer. He continued in the roofing trade, serving both residential and commercial properties for 60 years.

James was united in Holy Matrimony to Linda Johnson on June 15, 1962. They raised a family of seven children together and celebrated sixty-two years of marriage at the time of his death.

On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at the age of 82, he passed away at home with his family and friends at his bedside in Elgin, Texas.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Dean and Jesse Zelma Calhoun; siblings, Ruth McDonald, Irene Coppola, Ruby Meredith, Floyd McDonald, Bertha Mae Gladieaux, and Albert Roy Calhoun; grandchildren, Daniel Ryan Dover and Sherri Marie Calhoun; and great-grandchildren, Kaiya Sky Calhoun and Logan Marie Luper.

James is survived by his wife, Linda Calhoun; his daughter, Christina (Tina) Dover; his sons, James Matthew, Michael Roy, Jimmy Darren, Jason Wayne, Robert Clint, Albert Trent Calhoun, and Danny Walsh; thirty-three grandchildren; and thirty-five great-grandchildren.

Family and Friends will gather to Celebrate James’s life at Elgin Funeral Home on Saturday, April 5th, at 11:00 AM, with Brother Joshua Hausladen presiding. Interment will follow on a later date at Lawhon Springs Cemetery.
