Life’s Reflection
Words cannot express the humility in this man we called Husband, Daddy, Grand-daddy, Uncle, Cousin, Friend, Christian, Child of God:
Mr. Homer Johnson went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, August 26, 2011; with his wife at his side. Homer was a long-life time resident of Barrett Station and on that day the community began to mourn the passing of a strong and upright citizen, one that exercised his right to vote in every election.
Homer was the only son born to the late Archie Johnson and Daisy Price on March 15, 1925 in Goose Creek, Texas. He attended school in the Goose Creek I. S. D.; upon graduation he spent sometime at Prairie View College before entering the United States Army in 1943. His awards at the time of discharge included Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star; World War II victory medal, and a good conduct medal.
Mr. Homer was united in Holy Matrimony to Dorothy Mae Parish on January 28, 1947 by the late Reverend George Johnson, and to this union four girls were born.
Mr. Homer professed a belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board under the leadership of the late Reverend G. S. Matthews. Brother Johnson’s place in the church was standing at the door; there he served on the Usher Board for a number of years. He served faithfully in and out of season.
Mr. Homer led a fulfilling and active life for this legacy he established is endless.
Homer retired from Amoco Steel after thirty-five years. He was a leather expert and rendered his craft to Baumann Shoe Shop and Anderson Shoe Shop in Baytown more as a hobby than a job; before opening his own shop, Homer and Grand Sons’ Shoe Shop in Barrett Station. He watched the grandbabies for his Girls to go to the mall and all shall hold that day close to their heart. Homer supported many Non-profit organizations, always willing to share. He joined the Masonic Lodge in the early 1950’s in the Oak Addition area; he reinstated with John G. Jones Lodge Number 370 A. M. &A. F. in 2007. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign War Post. His most enjoyable time was playing pool and participating with the local and travel tournaments.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, all of his sisters, his youngest daughter: La-Barbera and eldest son, Hewitt (Sonny).
Mr. Homer leaves in God’s hands to share his legacy: his wife of sixty-four years – Dorothy Johnson; one son – Howard and Shirley Phillips of San Antonio; three daughters – Jacqueline Tompkins of Elgin, Texas; Billie Alfred of Crosby, Texas, and Gwendolyn Johnson of Elgin, Texas. One God- Child – Bobbie Faye Yarbrough of Crosby, Texas; one foster sister-in-law – Cleora Butler and one foster brother-in-law – Curtis Barker both of Elgin, Texas. He also leaves behind eighteen grandchildren; thirty- seven great grandchildren; three God grand children and a host of nieces, nephews; and cousins; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
