On the early morning of April 10, 2019, an angel of silence came and summoned the bright spirit of Our Mother, my Child, our Sister, our Aunt, our Grand-Ma, and our Friend, Gertie Mae Hill Williams. Her lips were sealed, and her soul has gone to a place of eternal rest.
Gertie was born January 20, 1955, in Bastrop, Texas to Doxey Jerome Hill and Elma Lucille Wintson. She was their first born. Her childhood days were centered around Midland, Texas, graduating from Midland High School in 1973. Gertie furthered her education with an Associate Degree from Midland Community College and Texas Tech University. At the age of fifteen, Gertie accepted Christ and was baptized at the Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend O. J. Archie.
On August 4, 1982, Gertie was united in Holy Matrimony to Johnny L. Williams. Gertie loved her family and this union provided unending love; together they would raise twelve children as well as five others, accepting two more, and assisted in the care of their nieces and nephews plus a host of grandchildren. They had celebrated 30 years of marriage at the time of John’s death. Gertie worked side by side with husband as he owned and managed the Piney Creek Lounge.
In the late 1990’s, Gertie followed her cousin to church in Elgin, Texas. Never meeting a stranger, Gertie enjoyed the service so much; she travelled from Piney to Elgin to attended Mount Moriah Baptist Church. As she accepted Christ as her personal savior, her cousin, the late Reverend L. R. White, encouraged her and she turned her focal point and begins to establish a strong Christian foundation for herself and her family. She poured her energy into Mount Moriah and became to serve on the Usher Board, a youth sponsor, then joined the Cooking Ministry, serving breakfast to the children to preparing a full coarse meal for 100 people for the church’s anniversary. She was the co-founder of the church’s first newsletter.
As the gates of heaven open, Gertie will join her husband, John L, her father, Doxey Hill and one aunt, Vivian McFarlin.
Gertie leaves to share and celebrates her homecoming her two sons Conrad Jerome Hill of Dallas, and Christopher Lamont Hill and wife, Aundi of Bastrop, also Chamarcus Winston, Tia Benson and Christjhane Hill; her mother, Lucille Winston, her sibling , Denice Winston, Larry Winston, Belinda Stoker, Donald Ray Thorne, Carolyn Winston, Bobby Washington, and Jerry Winston; John’s siblings J. Collins; she also. leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended relatives and friends, including the Mount Moriah Church’s family.
