Elvira Martinez

March 29, 1937 — December 15, 2019

Elvira R. Martinez, 82 of Elgin, Texas passed away peacefully on December 15, 2019.  Elvira was born in McQueeney, Texas on March 29, 1937.  She was the fifth, of eight children born to Ignacio Rodriguez and Aurelia Munoz.  She grew up in Sequin and attended school until she met the love of her life Angel Martinez.  They were married on June 29, 1959 and spent 44 years devoted to each other until his passing in 2003.

Elvira and Angel brought into this world 3 wonderful children, Theresa, Jose, and Connie.  She also had six wonderful grandchildren, Yvette, Yvonne, Crystal, Daniel, Michael, and Jacob.  Her six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren were the apple of her eye; she would light up each time she was around them.

Elvira enjoyed spending time with family, reading, cooking, visiting with friends, and going to church.  She was a kind and soft-spoken woman but, could also speak her mind.   She had a sense of humor and would make people laugh without even knowing it.  She also loved to look at photos and hear about your day; no matter what she was doing she would always stop to listen.

Elvira was a very spiritual person who had a deep faith in God.   She believed that prayer was the most important conversation of your day; she would start and end her day with prayer.   She was the Matriarch of her family and had a special prayer for each member.   She also loved passing out copies of prayers, which made an impact on everyone she met.  If you reminded her of a story from her past, that she felt wasn’t Christian, she would say, “That was before I knew Jesus.”    She will be truly missed but we know she would say, “Don’t Cry, I’m in God’s hands, we’ll meet again someday.”

She was preceded by both her parents, Aurelia and Ignacio Rodriguez; two brothers, Mac Rodriguez and Efren Rodriguez; her sister, Carmen Martinez; her sister-in-law, Rebecca Rodriguez; two brothers-in-law, Victor Martinez and Eliseo Garcia.

Elvira is survived by her three children, Theresa and husband Mark Morris, Jose A. Martinez and wife Shirley, and Connie and husband Andrew Zapata; her six grandchildren,  Yvette and husband Gabriel Gomez, Yvonne Martinez and partner Amador Yanez, Crystal and husband Jonathan Camarillo, Daniel Martinez and wife Abagail, Michael Martinez and wife Susana, and Jacob Garcia and wife Candace; her 13 great-grandchildren; her two brothers, Gonzalo Rodriguez and Nacho Rodriguez and his wife Priscilla; her two sisters, Susie and husband Arthur Sepulveda and Frances Garcia; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Family and friends will gather at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Elgin, for visitation on Thursday, December 19th from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.  The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm.   A Celebration of Christian Funeral Mass will be conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, December 20th at 10:00 am with Father George presiding.  Christian Burial will follow at the Elgin Latin Cemetery.
