Elizabeth Hawkins Sandifer, 91, of Manor died Saturday, January 14, 2017, in Elgin, Texas. She was born November 7, 1925, in Austin to the late Dellie Hawkins and Ethel Mae Goad Hawkins. Elizabeth graduated from Austin High School in 1943, and began work shortly thereafter with the American National Insurance company in Austin. On December 16, 1944, she married her husband of 63 years, Morris Sandifer.
Liz was born and raised in the city, but after marrying Morris, they moved to the country and lived on the Bud Deats ranch in Webberville, where Morris was the foreman and Liz was in charge of everything related to the running the household on the ranch. In 1959, they moved to Manor where she lived the remainder of her life.
Liz was raised in the Nazarene church, but after her marriage to Morris, they were life-long members of the Manor United Methodist Church. She volunteered countless hours to church-related activities and served on many committees, most notably, the PPR Committee.
Her hobbies were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved to sew, play cards, and was known as a wonderful cook. However, her greatest joy in life was to care for her family and extended family. Even though she only had two children and five grandchildren of her own, she was a second mom and known only as “Mamaw” to countless others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her seven siblings and her husband, Morris. She is survived by her son, Rex and wife Debbie of Elgin; her daughter, Connie and husband Cliff of Blue; five grandchildren including Terri Reiley and husband Brian of Elgin, Cassie Callahan and husband Billy Mac of Cameron, Clint Sanders and wife Lyndi of Cameron, Megan Wendler and husband Mark of Holland and Cole Sandifer and wife Elizabeth of Weslaco; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah and Haylee Reiley, Kincaid and Corley Callahan, Sloan and Dean Sanders, Eden Sandifer and Makinley Wendler. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie Harmon of Blue and her brother-in law Harold Sandifer and wife Betty of Lexington; her niece Barbara Byrns and husband Johnny of Webberville and numerous nieces and nephews on both the Hawkins and Sandifer sides of the family.
The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff at Elgin Nursing and Rehab for their loving care of our mother and “Mamaw” in the last two months of her life.
