Dr. Herbert A. Bailey died in his home in Elgin, Texas in the early morning hours of September 29, 2015, under the watchful love of his longtime caregiver, Rerai Jonga. He was one month short of his 96th birthday. His family knows that he now rests peacefully with his wife of 69 years, Alma Campbell Bailey.Herbert was born in Chickasha, OK on October 28, 1919, the only child of Sarah Pearl Smith and Herbert Ashton Bailey of Rush Springs, OK. The family migrated to Raton, NM where Herbert met and eventually married Alma, his 7th grade sweetheart. They both graduated from the University of New Mexico, where they were dubbed the handsomest couple on campus. Herbert then graduated from Southwestern Medical School (now UT Southwestern) in September of 1945, where he was one of two recipients of the Ho Din Award, honoring outstanding knowledge, understanding, and compassion. He served as a physician in the U.S. Army 1946 " 1948, attaining the rank of captain. After his discharge, he joined a group of gastroenterologists in Dallas, Texas and practiced internal medicine until he retired in 1990. He was passionately dedicated to his profession and to his patients who could call him at home in the evenings and at any time on the weekends. He always took the time " and was loved and revered by his patients in return. He did enjoy a little golf on Friday afternoons.Herbert Bailey leaves behind his loving children, Barbara and husband, Ernie Bogart of Elgin, TX, and Herbert Arthur Bailey, Jr. and wife, Laureen of Katy, TX; his grandchildren, Nicholas Bailey and wife, Katie and Thomas Bailey of Katy, TX, Ernest Bogart, III and wife, Natasha of Pflugerville, and Adrian Bogart of Austin; four great-grandchildren, Ernest Bogart, IV., Eron Bogart, Samantha Bailey, and Hunter Bailey; and his sister, Mary Robinson of Santa Fe, NM. Herbert Bailey also leaves two wonderful spirits, his caregivers Rerai and Kenneth Jonga to whom the family is deeply indebted.
