“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:21
Early in the morning on Friday, January 20, 2023, James Andrew Hendricks Sr. heard the voice of his Lord and Savior saying “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) He answered the call and went to be with Jesus.
THE LIFE
In Pflugerville, Texas on Monday, December 17, 1934 a bouncing baby boy was born to Benjamin & Carrie (Jamison) Hendricks Sr. The youngest of 12, he was well loved and reared in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He accepted Christ at an early age in Pflugerville, Texas.
As a child he moved to Austin with his eldest brother Leroy and his wife Sarah to attend Fiskville School. He later served a tour in the United States Army.
In 1953, he married Evelyn Collins Hendricks and to this union nine children were born.
The Man
James was a Jack of all trades, a master plumber by trade but there wasn’t much
he didn’t do. He worked for many years as a plumber throughout the Austin and Houston areas. His pride and joy was being an instrument to help build or make major renovations for five churches in Austin, Houston and Elgin.
He later married Robbie Cathey in 1975 and their families became blended with her three children and one child was born into this union. He loved all his children dearly. It was important to him that all his children and grandchildren knew the Lord, loved one another, and lived cohesively in harmony.
He united with Winn’s Memorial Baptist Church, February 10, 2002, under the leadership of Reverend D. W. Townsend. Throughout his life he served the church in various capacities including Chairman of Deacons, Brotherhood President, Male Chorus President, and Elgin Sub-District Brotherhood President. In 1976 he was ordained as a deacon at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Houston, Texas by Reverend F. D. Anderson. He took this role very serious and was always his pastor’s greatest support.
His father, mother, grandparents, five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Also awaiting his arrival in glory are his son David, daughter CarolSue, granddaughters Lisa, Tamika, and Twanna, and great grandson Samuel Bruce.
The Legend
He leaves a legacy to love and treasure his life; a devoted, faithful and loving wife Robbie Hendricks, his children Ruby (Carl) Montgomery, James Hendricks Jr., Vanessa Jones, Cecil Hendricks, Rose (Pastor D. W.) Townsend, Rita (Alvin) Jones, Paul Michael Hendricks, Kerry (KC) Hendricks, Winifred Jones, Deborah (Darrell) Zeno, Johnny (Trina) Jones III and Ramona McFarlin. He also leaves his brother Clarence (Ruthie) Hendricks, 33 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren, four generations of nephews and nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. As an astute, studious man of God and devout deacon he leaves many church congregations and communities that he touched were left bettered. Chairman Emeritus Deacon James Hendricks, Sr. will be missed dearly by his Winn’s Memorial Baptist Church family.
He will lie In-State at the Elgin Funeral Home on Thursday, January 26th from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted at Winn’s Memorial Baptist Church Friday, January 27th at 11:00 AM with Reverend D.W. Townsend presiding.
