David Scott Mogonye was born on November 21, 1978, at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, to Sandra Scott (Mogonye) Freitag and David Albert Mogonye. He passed away from this earth on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the age of 45 years. Scott accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church of Elgin. Scott’s relationship with the Lord provided him with the strength and courage he would need throughout his life. Scott was a 1997 graduate of Elgin High School and a member of the class of 2001 at Texas A & M University. Everyone who knew Scott knew he was a hard-core Aggie. While attending Texas A&M, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, which began his yearning to defeat cancer and the first of his health issues. Scott endured numerous health trials with strength, determination, and character. He was passionate about his work at the American Cancer Society. He also held positions at the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Office of the Attorney General of Texas.
Scott’s relationship with God led him to a life of service through music. Scott loved being at church and spent many years singing in choirs and sharing his musical talent. He always wanted to be accompanied by his mother, Sandra Freitag, playing the piano, and they spent a lot of time practicing cantatas and special music over the years. Scott was a sports addict – he would watch and read about everything from football to golf to girls’ softball. He could remember sports statistics from the time he could first read and spent many hours over the years discussing that information. Scott loved to travel, and when he did, the people he met became his friends. He was so personable and never met a stranger. The nurses and doctors at Dell Seton Medical Center were not able to get out of his room without telling him something personal about themselves, and the next time he was in the hospital, he would remember to ask them about what he had learned from them. He felt it was important to go to a teaching hospital so students could learn from his health complexities in hopes that his pain would help someone else.
The family would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Tate Douglas, Dr. Paul H. Harford, Dr. Um Pandey, and Dr. Sarah Mills for treating Scott with such compassion and courage. These physicians as well as interns, residents and fellows went above and beyond to not only care for Scott but to research new and innovative treatments. No matter the time of day or day of the week these physicians were ready to listen and find answers. To the countless number of nurses and other staff at Dell Seton Medical Center the family wishes to thank them from the bottom of their hearts for their years of care for Scott.
Scott loved his family and appreciated all the time he got to spend with them. He knew that his time on this earth was short and wanted to spend time with the people he loved. Being an uncle was one of his greatest joys. Their visits, their sporting events, and going on road trips with them gave him something to always look forward to.
Scott is preceded in death by his grandparents, Juanita and Abner Scott, and Frank and Malinda Mogonye; father, David Mogonye; stepmother, Jan Mogonye; and stepfather, Ken Freitag.
