He spent most of his childhood and adult years in Elgin, Texas. He started his working career at an early age doing odd jobs. He worked as a brick man at Butler Brick Yard for 20 years. Upon leaving there, he worked at Austin State School in the maintenance department. After leaving the state school, he started his trucking business with Payne Brick Yard until his retirement.
