Carroll M. “Sonny” Hibbs, Jr. was born April 11th, 1936, in Austin, Texas, to Francis and Carroll M. Hibbs, Sr. Sonny grew up in the towns of Austin, Manor and Buda. Sonny attended Buda High school, where he was a star athlete, competing at a high level in several sports.
In 1953, his senior year of high school, Sonny joined the Texas National Guard. After graduating with the Class of ’54, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably, achieving the rank of Lieutenant.
Sonny married Judy Ann Lewis on September 6th, 1958, in Buda. The next day, the newlywed couple left for Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was assigned as a jump master to the 82nd Airborne Division. In December 1958, he was transferred to Wiesbaden, Germany, where their two sons, Stan and Jim, were born.
After four years in Germany, they returned to the states in August of 1962. Sonny then decided to leave the Army and move to Austin, where he joined the Austin police department. He served with them until August of 1964. While he loved police work, it was too difficult to support a family on a police officer’s salary, so he decided to rejoin the Army. Sonny made the Army his career, serving two tours in Vietnam and receiving numerous awards and commendations. Sonny retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1977, and then settled in Elgin.
Sonny undertook various occupations after retirement, including ranching and real estate.
Sonny married Argie Hall after having been widowed earlier from Judy’s passing and moved to Driftwood, Texas, where he continued ranching.
In February 2013, Sonny was widowed again when Argie passed, but continued to reside in Driftwood until September of 2021, when his health required, he move to the Buckner Villas Memory Care. Sonny suffered from Early Alzheimer’s syndrome and on June 19th, 2022, he tripped and fell, resulting in a traumatic head injury that hospitalized him for two weeks before he was called Home.
Sonny was preceded in death by both his parents; his wives, Judy Hibbs and Argie Hall; his brother, Dale; his sisters, Marianne and Linda.
Sonny is survived by his two sons, Stanley Hibbs and partner Deborah Joseph, and James Hibbs and wife Rebekah; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and dear friends.
