Bruce Alan Hagen, 58 of Austin, passed from this life on Monday, December 4th, 2017. He was born in Big Spring, Texas on August 19, 1959 to Betty Jo and Leland Gary Hagen. Bruce described himself as a Military Brat and was quite proud of it. He lived in Alaska, Utah, and Florida before his Dad retired from the Air Force. He moved to Austin in 1972, and graduated from LBJ High School in 1978.
Bruce met his wife, Penny, in 1982, and they married in 1983. Their daughter Allison was born in 1990, and she was the light of his life. Bruce always put his girls first and took care of them first and foremost. Family vacations were always a special time and they traveled as a family to many places enjoying the beauty of God's creations.
Bruce worked in various professions before settling in the Electrical field. He began his career at Dealers Electric in 1980, and from there he would go on to work for Tedco Electric, CED Nunn, and Hill Country Electric, where he was employed at the time of his death. Bruce was first and foremost a family man. He made his family a priority and he was always available to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed.
Church was also extremely important to Bruce and he loved being a part of the Brent Wood Oaks Church of Christ’s Cooking Team, where he was a member for 27 years. Bruce loved his Church family and would stand at the door welcoming those arriving at Church or for the Church’s 1st Sunday meal. His ever-present smile was one of the first things people noticed and appreciated. Bruce had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed giving a hard time to those he loved most. He would make you think he was serious and then break into that smile that always made you realize he was joking. He also volunteered his time at Brentwood Christian School, helping his wife Penny set up for many events. He said that when Penny started working at BCS he did too. He found great joy in being involved in many activities at BCS and was happy to serve the school in any way he could.
Bruce loved sports and he especially enjoyed watching his great-nephews play football, basketball, and baseball. He cheered for his great-niece at her basketball games and would promise her ice cream if she fouled out, telling her it meant that she had played hard. He drove two other great-nieces to horseback on Monday nights, telling them stories of his childhood and bull riding days. He made them laugh and they were never sure if Bruce’s stories were true or if he was making it up. He loved his four great-nieces and nephews in Grapevine and was extremely proud of all their accomplishments as well. The poems, stories, and thoughts for the day written by another great-nephew always amazed him and Bruce bragged about him at every opportunity.
Bruce never judged or critiqued others and he loved those he met unconditionally. As one friend said, "He was my mentor and taught me that I didn't have to be a perfect man to be an amazing Christian man".
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Penny Hagen, his daughter, Allison Amy Hagen and her boyfriend Chris Carlson, his mother, Betty Jo Hagen and his Mother-in-law, Mary Bryan. He is also survived by sisters and brothers in law Pat and Lee Jackson and Jean and Doug Lackey, nephews and nieces, Brian and Kristi Jackson, Amy and Grady Bruce, Lori and Brett Jackson, and Scott Lackey, and ten great nieces and nephews, Luke, Keller, Lyla Kate, Jackson, Elayna, Jessica, Breanne, Tate, Laci and Isabelle. He is also survived by many other Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his Father, Leland, his brother David, and his Father in law Wilson Bryan.
The family would like to request Memorial Contributions to be made, in Bruce's Memory, to the Brentwood Christian School or the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ Building Fund.
