The epitome of elegance and steadfast faith, Ms. Bernetta Ann Smith entered into Eternal rest on May 26, 2024.
Bernetta Ann Smith was born December 03, 1954, in Elgin, Texas to the parentage of Howard and Eddie Lee (Jackson) Bishop.
Growing up with a strong Christian foundation, Bernetta accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend R. A. Westbrook. Bernetta attended the public schools of Elgin Independent School District, finishing at Booker T. Washington High School. Bernetta was united in Holy Matrimony to Clifford Smith, and this union was blessed with four children: Clifford Jr., Danny, David, and Jennifer.
As Bernetta entered the work field, she followed in her mother’s footsteps, working in healthcare. She found her career passion by working as a food dietitian for five years at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas. In addition to motherhood and working, she remained connected to her faith in God by adopting and living by the biblical principles of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In 1982, Bernetta left the healthcare industry and ventured into insurance with her cousin, Fannie. Ultimately, her career in insurance would have her relocate to Houston, Texas and work as an Insurance Claims Adjuster for AIG. She eventually returned to healthcare, working as a home health provider for those in need until she was unable to do so.
Her biggest joy was family times and holiday gatherings with her family. And, of course, on her trips back home to Elgin, she would not miss the opportunity to enjoy sausage from Southside Market.
Awaiting Bernetta’s arrival in Glory are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bishop Sr.; a sister, Eva Mae Bishop, and a nephew, Oliver K. Jones III.
Bernetta’s beautiful life and spirit will forever be cherished in the lives of her three sons: Clifford Smith Jr. (Washington, DC), Danny Gordon Smith (Austin, Texas), and David Jerome Smith (Houston, Texas); daughter, Jennifer Lynette Smith (Houston, Texas); grandson, Gavin Steele (Houston, Texas); sister, Jennifer Jean Jones (Pflugerville, Texas); and brother, Howard Bishop Jr. (Austin, Texas), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
Family and Friends will gather for a Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home on Friday, June 7th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Home-Going Celebration will be conducted at Elgin Funeral Home on Saturday, June 8th at 11:00 AM with Reverend L.H. McShan presiding. The inurnment will be private.
