She was born in California, to Ethel (Richardson) and Melvin Eckhardt Hudson on April 4, 2015. Alice grew up following her father, who was in the construction business across the United States, including projects such as the Los Angeles Metropolitan Aqueduct and the Delaware Tunnel under the Hudson River. During World War II, she met a sailor from Mercedes, Texas, on a train. The sailor's name was Herman Louis Newmann (1923-1993) and they were married on October 15, 1945, in Albany, California. After having four children, they moved their family to Austin, Texas. In 1962, they started their own mechanical construction business and did projects from one end of Texas to the other. In approximately 1976, they moved their business and their home to Elgin. In 1989, they closed their business and Herman passed away shortly afterwards on December 7, 1993. Alice remained in Elgin and never remarried; she always felt she was still married to her "Lover Boy" Herman.
