Obituary for Alfred Billy "Bill" Spakes Jr.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Billy “Bill” Spakes Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on October 24, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on July 29, 1944, in Amarillo, Texas, Bill was the son of Alfred B. Spakes Sr. and Letha Magdelene Sterling Spakes. He was known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.
Bill spent his early years in Amarillo before moving to Pflugerville, Texas, where he graduated from high school. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country while stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. It was there that Bill met the love of his life, Alma Brickhouse. Together, they built a family, raising three children: Maggie Baugh and her partner John Lewis, Alfred B. Spakes III and his wife Rachel, and Tanya Spakes and her partner Kerry Wall. Alma and Bill shared many years of love and partnership before her passing.
Throughout his life, Bill was deeply passionate about fishing, with one of his favorite spots being Jonestown Marina on Lake Travis. He and Alma spent many weekends drowning minnows together, creating cherished memories. Bill also loved watching his Texas Longhorns, cheering passionately for them no matter what sport was playing. He was equally devoted to the Dallas Cowboys, always in high spirits during game time.
For over 30 years, Bill worked at the Austin American-Statesman, where he dedicated his career before retiring. Known for his integrity and kindness, he was always willing to lend a helping hand and share a smile. To his loved ones, he was more than just a family member—he was a mentor, a guide, and a constant source of support.
Bill is survived by his beloved siblings: Jim Spakes, Rexford Spakes, Larry Spakes, Jackie Burgh, and Sandy Humphreys. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Scheumack.
Bill is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Gregory Spakes and his fiancée Ashley, Tori Boone and her husband Josh, Edward Natalie and his wife Diana, Christopher Baugh and his wife Joana, Sierra Walton and her partner Jay Busby, Daniel Walton III and his wife Meagan, Jeremiah Baugh and his wife Brittany, Casey Baugh and his wife Rene, Jacob and his partner Nikki and Makayla Walton and her husband Bob, Mackenzie and Linzee. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, including Emery, Tanner, Brodie, Madison, Ellie, Hallie, Allie, Easton, Nevaeh, Dillion, Mason, Jaylyn, Cassandra, Maya, Abigal, Jessica and Raelynn.
Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 30th from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Bill’s Life at 3:00 PM with Pastor Tim Denton presiding. The inurnment will be private.
