Clarence Baylor Huff, 96, of Elgin, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 2, 2020. Clarence was born in McDade, Texas on November 22, 1924 to Gracie Lee Dunbar Huff and Thomas Levi Huff. Clarence grew up at the Brick Yard. There was a time in our country’s history when young men possessed a strong since of duty and obligation to their serve their country, especially in time of war. Clarence was one of those brave young men; he dropped out of school, provided a fictious date of birth and enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his Country Honorably. After the war, he moved back to McDade and married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Pate. They eventually moved their family to the family farm in the Pleasant Grove Community, where they raised their two children.
Clarence worked hard his whole life and was active in his community. At the turn of the century, a group of Elgin Highschool students came together to honor all the young men, who left school early to join the military during World War II, with honorary diplomas. He was an Honorary Member of the Elgin Fired Department. In his spare time, Clarence loved to hunt and fish and spend time outdoors.
Clarence is preceded in death by his wife of seventy-one years, Barbara Ann Huff, both parents; his five siblings, Samuel, James, Lloyd, Tommy, and Wendel Huff. He is survived by his two children, Rebecca A Huggins and James Huff; his four grandchildren, Jana Henry, Ronald Huggins, Jr., Jamie Dunkin, and Charlotte; two great-granddaughters, Mariah and Makayla Clevenger; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
He will lie in state at the Elgin Funeral Home, Monday, December 7th from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Funeral Service will be conducted at Williams Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, December 8th at 2:00 PM with the Reverend, Greg Long presiding. Interment will follow with Military Honors at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
